As an alum of UNT, I was asked for some input on a recently article timeline.
It was some basic questions about timing, business, advice, etc.
It marks my 10 years as solo/freelance/entrepreneur. I’ve enjoyed much of the last 10 years, but also it’s been a lot of work.
I was just thinking the other day about the late hours I put in on the iOS GasBuddy app version 1. Calvin Carter (BottleRocket) and I were emailing well into the night. This was before MapKit and all the other frameworks that Apple provides today.
Also, I was discussing meeting John Gyleynse at the Apple Tech Talks in 2008 in Austin and subsequently at WWDC a couple of time.
I got to see Steve Jobs introduce FaceTime in person and a slew of other memories good and bad over the years.
It’s been a while ride that’s led to international travel and teaching, iOS book deal, recording online courses, developing more apps than I remember and so much more: meeting great people, learning tons of tech and the variety of benefits of “being your own boss” (aka having tons of bosses – ready my book on being freelance here).
10 years is longer than any job I’ve had, almost half of my professional career, half of my marriage and almost as long as I’ve had kids. My kids probably don’t remember a time when I had a job.
Here’s to another 10 and hopefully many more… or retirement b/c I am so vastly successful… either way I expect to be developing in some capacity. I do love it!
